Endovenous Laser Ablation

Understanding Endovenous Laser Ablation Treatment

What is Endovenous Laser Ablation?

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure that treats varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). It uses laser energy to seal off diseased veins and redirects blood flow to healthier veins. EVLA is an outpatient procedure, ensuring minimal discomfort and a swift recovery.

How Does Endovenous Laser Ablation Work?

An EVLA procedure typically follows these steps:

  1. Preparation: First, we clean and prep the affected leg, then we numb the area where we are going to work with a local anesthetic.
  2. Insertion: We then make a small incision and insert a thin laser fiber into the vein using ultrasound guidance.
  3. Ablation: After that, the laser fiber delivers targeted laser energy to the vein wall. The energy heats it and causes it to collapse and seal shut.
  4. Removal: Finally, we remove the laser fiber and close the incision with a small bandage.

The procedure typically takes about 30-45 minutes, and patients can usually return home the same day.

What Happens After Endovenous Laser Ablation Treatment?

  • Post-Procedure Care: Patients are advised to wear compression stockings for at least a week to aid in the healing process, decrease post-procedure inflammation and improve circulation.
  • Activity: You can usually resume normal activities within a day or two. But you should avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting for about a week.
  • Follow-Up: You will need a follow-up appointment to monitor the treated veins and ensure proper healing.

Can You Fly After Endovenous Laser Ablation?

Flying is generally safe after EVLA, but you should wait a week or two before flying. Since sitting for extended periods increases the risk of blood clots, you should take precautions during a long trip. Wearing compression stockings, staying well hydrated and moving around frequently during the flight can reduce your risk.

If you need to fly shortly after your procedure, consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

What are the risks of Endovenous Laser Ablation?

As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects. These include post-procedure discomfort in the treated area, bruising, swelling, and in rare cases, thermal injury, nerve injury, development of a deep venous thrombosis (DVT)  and infection. It’s important to discuss any concerns before undergoing the procedure.

What Are the Benefits of Endovenous Laser Ablation?

EVLA offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Minimally Invasive: The procedure requires only a small incision, reducing the risk of infection and scarring.
  • Quick Recovery: Patients can typically return to normal activities within a day or two.
  • Effective: EVLA has a high success rate in treating varicose veins and CVI, providing significant symptom relief.
  • Outpatient Procedure: EVLA is an outpatient procedure, so no hospital stay is necessary.
  • Less Pain: The procedure usually involves less pain and bruising compared to traditional vein stripping surgeries.

How Effective is Endovenous Laser Ablation?

EVLA is very effective, with successful closure rates typically exceeding 95%. Most patients experience significant relief from their symptoms after treatment. The procedure also permanently seals treated veins, preventing the recurrence of varicose veins in those specific veins. Long-term outcomes are generally excellent, with many patients remaining symptom-free for years.

Is Endovenous Laser Ablation Right for Me?

EVLA may be right for you if you have:

  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency: EVLA is effective in treating the underlying cause of CVI.
  • Varicose Veins: If you have large, symptomatic varicose veins, EVLA can provide relief.
  • Failed Conservative Measures: If conservative treatments do not provide enough relief, then EVLA might be right for you.
