Varithena

Understanding Varithena Treatment

What is Varithena?

Varithena is an FDA-approved, minimally invasive non-thermal treatment for varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). It injects a specialized foam into the treated veins, causing them to collapse and close. This treatment helps to reroute blood flow to healthier veins, alleviating symptoms and improving vein health.

Who Makes Varithena?

BTG International Ltd., a global specialist healthcare company, manufactures the treatment. They develop and commercialize innovative products to address significant unmet medical needs.

How Does Varithena Work?

Treatment typically follows these measures:

  1. Preparation: First, we clean and prep the affected leg, then we numb the area where we are going to access the vein with a local anesthetic.
  2. Foam Injection: After that, we inject a small amount of foam into the affected vein using a fine needle or catheter.
  3. Vein Closure: Then the foam fills the vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut.
  4. Rerouting Blood Flow: Afterward, blood redirects to healthier veins, improving circulation and reducing symptoms.

The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes, and patients can typically return to work immediately afterward.

What Happens After Varithena Treatment?

After treatment, patients can expect:

  • Symptomatic Relief: Many patients experience significant relief from symptoms such as pain, swelling, and heaviness in the legs.
  • Minimal Downtime: Most patients can resume normal activities within a day or two.
  • Post-Procedure Care: Patients are advised to wear compression stockings for at least a week to aid in the healing process, decrease post-procedure inflammation and improve circulation.
  • Follow-Up: Patients will need a follow-up appointment to monitor their treated veins and recovery.

What Are the Benefits of Varithena Treatment?

There are many benefits to Varithena, such as:

  • Minimally Invasive: The procedure involves only small injections, reducing the risk of complications and scarring.
  • Quick Recovery: Patients can also return to their daily activities almost immediately.
  • Effective: It has a high success rate in treating varicose veins and CVI, providing significant symptom relief.
  • Outpatient Procedure: It is an outpatient procedure, so you do not need to visit the hospital.
  • Less Pain: The procedure is less painful and discomforting than traditional vein stripping surgeries.

How Effective is Varithena Treatment?

Varithena is highly effective, with clinical studies showing success rates exceeding 94%. Most patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms and overall quality of life. The treatment permanently closes treated veins, thus preventing the recurrence of varicose veins in those specific veins. Long-term outcomes are generally excellent, with many patients remaining symptom-free for years.

How Safe is Varithena?

Varithena is safe when performed by a qualified healthcare provider. As with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects including bruising, swelling, and in rare cases, development of a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) or allergic reactions. However, serious complications are rare. It is important to discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider before undergoing the procedure.

Is Varithena Right for Me?

Varithena may be a suitable treatment option if you have:

  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency: It effectively treats the underlying cause of CVI.
  • Varicose Veins: If you have symptomatic varicose veins, this treatment can provide relief.
  • Failed Conservative Measures: If conservative measures are not enough to get relief, this treatment could help.
